Orrin Hudson uses chess to provide teens with better decision-making skills

AKRON — On Saturday, April 14, 2018 noted youth mentor and anti-violence activist Orrin “Checkmate” Hudson will use a life-size chessboard to bring life lessons to students in Akron.

This event will be sponsored by NLP Aqua Solutions and The Limitless You.  Troy Rackley, CEO and President is returning to his hometown of Akron to give back to the community that raised him.  His message is always take it to the next level and know that you are limitless.

By learning to outthink the competition, Hudson says these young people will learn to respect others, think before they make dangerous moves, and give more than they take.

The session, to be held at the Emmanuel Christian Academy, will outline specific strategies that help students put “Brains Before Bullets.”

Hudson, founder of Be Someone (www.BeSomeone.org), is an Air Force veteran and  former law enforcement officer. He has been awarded the prestigious FBI Director’s Community Leader Award, and, since the year 2000, his program has brought 55,000 students the life-affirming message of “Peace, Positivity, and Purpose.”

Be Someone supporters have included Jane Fonda, Tyler Perry, Steve Harvey as well as other celebrities. Hudson has also appeared on Good Morning America, the CBS Early Morning Show, CNN, and FOX & Friends and has been the subject of articles in USA Today, Essence Magazine, Sports Illustrated for Teens, Jet, Black Enterprise and Time Magazine for Kids. Finally, Hudson appeared on the cover of Chess Life, the world’s most widely read chess magazine.

Hudson’s life-changing message to urban youth is:

  • Get Your Heads Up!
  • Get Your Pants Up!
  • Get Your Grades Up!
  • and Never Give Up!

He says he won’t stop until he has reached at least one million students with his life-changing messages. Hudson was dubbed the “pied piper of positivity” by CNN for coaching his students to a statewide chess championship and three citywide chess championships.

At this upcoming workshop, Hudson will teach a new currency to young people called KASH (Knowledge, Attitude, Skills, Habits), and show them how it can change their lives for the better.
“Incidents like the tragedy in Parkland, Florida and ongoing violence in Chicago need to stop,” said Hudson. “I’m in Akron to say there’s a new sheriff in town. He’s got a king, a queen and a pawn, but not a gun.”
