Orrin C. Hudson, who served as an Alabama State Trooper for seven years, is the founder and CEO of a non-profit academy called Be Someone. Based in Atlanta, the academy uses the game of chess to teach young people how to succeed in life by making the right moves.  But Hudson explains the recent George Floyd case as well as other high profile negative interactions between law enforcement and young Blacks, most often young Black males, has moved him to tap into his experience as a former police officer to offer a free, online course on how to survive if stopped for whatever reason.

"Although we will still be offering our normal 'Chess for Success' classes," explains Hudson, "I felt a session to give our young men the tools to properly and successfully interact with police officers should be a priority."  He added that although there will not be chess instruction in this class, the purpose of the game is to keep the King alive.  "The goal of my May 22 class is to keep everyone alive."

Some of the things Hudson will cover in his 90 minute free online Zoom session will be how to be respectful of authority; how to comply with requests/orders issued by officers; how to provide requested information; how to lessen the chances of being targeted; and by all means not attempt to flee just because you are frightened.  Hudson teaches his chess students there are consequences for every action.  A negative move will almost always result in a negative consequence. In this case, a wrong move could be a deadly move.  Just the opposite for acting positively and responsibly. "I will teach participants how to survive a chance meeting using common sense approaches," he explains.

The free class will be offered Saturday, May 22, 3 - 4:30 p.m. via Zoom.  Hudson is requesting pre-registration so he can manage the number of participants.  Those wishing to attend should click here  https://besomeone.eventbrite.com/ information.  They will receive registration information and instructions.

When he is not teaching classes in person in Atlanta or online, Hudson is traveling across the United States successfully providing his unique, exciting, and engaging curriculum to thousands of young people. To date, he has taught more than 88,000 people how to think strategically by making the right moves routinely.  He has been featured on Good Morning America, the CBS Early Morning Show, CNN, FOX & FriendsThe Tom Joyner Morning Show, and more. His academy has also been recognized by USA Today, Essence Magazine, Sports Illustrated for Teens, Jet, Black Enterprise, People, and Time Magazine for Kids.
